The government-affiliated organisations attributed the sharp fall in foreign tourists to the global economic slowdown, the appreciation of the yen and the spread of the new influenza. The fall in the number of foreign tourists in July from a year earlier marked the 12th consecutive month of decline, matching the downtrend set between February 1993 and January 1994 when the value of the yen rose sharply, the report added. According to the report the number of tourists from Singapore dropped by 34.6 per cent, followed by China with a fall of 32.8 per cent and South Korea with a decline of 28.4 per cent. The report also said 1,289,000 Japanese traveled abroad in July, down 3.2 per cent in the third straight year-on-year decline.
