PARIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–May 19, 2022–

Arrow Electronics (NYSE: ARW) today announced its new Data Analytics and Network Innovation Project, also known as “DANI Project”, contribute to improving the lives of wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Arrow unveiled the project at change nowa three-day international summit in Paris (May 19-21) that brings together leading visionaries and innovators, who share their innovations and solutions to protect the planet and make life more sustainable.

At the center of the DANI project is 28-year-old wheelchair tennis player Dani Caverzaschi, who was born with most of his leg straight and several malformations on his left. Dani is taking part in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Wheelchair Tennis Tour and will be taking part, for the first time, in the second Grand Slam™ of the year, Roland-Garros, from May 31 to June 04. He was also part of the Spanish national team that finished second in a row at the World Cup in Vilamoura, Portugal in May.

Arrow and Dani are collaborating on two technology solutions to improve the lives of wheelchair users and people with disabilities:

  • ‘WheelWay’ – an innovative navigation system, specially designed for anyone with reduced mobility, helping to overcome the problems associated with mobility around cities, and;
  • ‘DataRally’ – live, real-time data, from sensors on an athlete’s wheelchair, equipment and body, allowing them to analyze, refine and improve their performance in competition

Building on Arrow’s experience and expertise, both initiatives demonstrate new ways to approach mobility – in an integrated way – and showcase new technologies that combine advanced hardware and software, cloud architecture and analytics to collect and analyze data. Uniquely, the data is specifically relevant to the needs of people in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility.

WheelWay focuses on “what is possible” rather than obstacles, allowing wheelchair users to plan their journeys and experience the city around them. Routing instructions combine “live” data from smart GPS and open public cloud services, to provide “real-time” routing information suitable for mobility. This is a unique solution for the disability community.

The second move, DataRally, is designed for professional wheelchair athletes; to improve performance and help you gain a competitive edge. Until now, Dani had to rely on feeling and intuition to analyze his game. Now, using sensors on his wheelchair, tennis racket and a wearable device on his wrist, DataRally allows Dani and his coach collect and analyze real-time data from every game and training session – and establish specific areas of his game to work on.

The technology can be adapted to measure speed, acceleration, distance traveled, impacts, number of turns, heart rate, serve speed, ball placement on the racquet and more.

“These solutions don’t take over; they don’t make me more dependent,” said Caverzaschi, whose goal is to normalize disability. “I generate the data, which is then analyzed – the information then comes back to me, via the applications, which allows me to make informed decisions. I decide where to go and what to do. I decide how to adapt on the pitch. It gives me more choices; more freedom and opportunities.

DANI is an Edge Computing project that brings computing and data storage closer to the source of the data – in this case, Dani. Each technology is developed by members of Arrow’s Graduate Program; young employees who, like Dani, are digital natives in their twenties.
