Unit 1 of Karot Hydropower Project with 180MW power generation capacity successfully started operation after successful commissioning of “wet test”.
Unit-1 with a nominal capacity of 180 MW operates continuously at full load and supplies power to the national grid, said a statement issued by Karot Power Comapny (KPCL).
The statement adds that the 500 kV distribution substation of the 720 MW Karot hydropower project achieved backfeed on April 02, 2022. The start of full load of Unit 1 of the Karot project is a milestone for the project. .
In addition, Unit 2 has also started wet commissioning. The Karot HPP team, with the support of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), will carry out the testing and commissioning of the remaining units according to schedule.
On the occasion, the Managing Director (CEO) of Karot Power Company Limited, Wang Minsheng, said; “It is thanks to the hard work of the Chinese and Pakistani staff that allowed us to achieve this important milestone. The energy produced from Unit 1 will provide support to the national grid to alleviate the energy crisis”.
Timely commissioning of the Karot hydropower projects will greatly alleviate the power shortage that Pakistan has been facing recently. The Karot Hydropower Project is the first large-scale hydropower project within the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project has a total installed capacity of 720 MW and can supply around 3.2 billion kWh of clean energy per year after its completion.
It will meet the electricity demand of about 5 million people in Pakistan, which will reduce the electricity supply pressure in the country. The project aims to start commercial operation by mid-2022. The project is funded by the China Three Gorges Corporation and is part of its global push for “clean and green” infrastructure development.
