About the Opportunity
The University of Sydney School of Project Management offers world-class research, research student training, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, executive education and engagement.
Located in the Faculty of Engineering, the school offers the opportunity to study all forms of projects and learn from various project-based industries. The School seeks faculty members who work in all aspects of organizing projects, programs and portfolios, candidates whose work brings new perspectives to the field of project management and project studies , and candidates adopting an interdisciplinary approach to projects. Our work covers established areas that use projects, for example for organizational change, software, engineering and infrastructure delivery, and emerging project-based industries. All positions are permanent full-time positions based in Sydney.
In this role, you will be asked to design and deliver leading teaching and research in the area of project, program and/or portfolio management. Preference will be given to individuals who have or are developing a track record of research excellence in the area of project studies or project management, and who have a proven ability to bring this expertise to the classroom.
Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
- Emerging and changing industries based on projects: for example, projects in new energy industries; project-based interfaces with manufacturing industries; project analysis;
- Projects and resource use: for example, how projects embrace the net zero and sustainable development goals, and engage with and address climate change;
- Leadership and project management: for example, managing and inspiring project teams, technical leadership, project sponsorship, business decision making, change management, project models and how project setup affects results; and
- Projects in context: for example, early-stage decision-making on which projects to build, new understandings of the value of projects and their benefits and projects, programs and portfolios in a broader societal context.
Those who work in a closely related area of research and who can clearly demonstrate knowledge of the research literature on project, program and/or portfolio management will also be considered. A history of project research that is transferable between industry sectors is desirable.
The School of Project Management includes training programs ranging from short courses to corporate executive training as well as undergraduate and master’s coursework programs. A demonstrated ability to provide executive training will be advantageous. The teaching program strengthens the ability of graduates to examine the key interdependencies inherent in managing and leading complex projects. The program engages with these dynamics to develop skills for effective planning, management, and leadership, and is accredited by the Project Management Institute’s Global Accreditation Center. The John Grill Institute for Project Leadership is associated with the School of Project Management. It is a cross-sector, multi-disciplinary institute that brings together leading researchers from across the University and works with leading industries, governments and policy to develop new insights into how we design, implement place, deliver and derive value from projects, and organizes an annual international symposium on project leadership in a changing world. The Institute’s research on project leadership covers project sponsorship, project governance, project management and related topics, including: project models and digital transformation; Organizational dynamics of projects; and Projects for a Sustainable and Resilient Future. In this role, you will have the opportunity to also work as a member of the Institute.

- the ability to contribute to the administration of the school, university and wider community
- the completion or completion of a doctorate. in the field of project studies or project management or a related discipline
The starting level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience and knowledge. Nominees will contribute to scholarship, research excellence and community service at the University of Sydney.

Duration and remuneration
Successful candidates will be offered a continuous full-time position. A competitive compensation package will be negotiated based on appointment level.
